The Hong Kong diaries

photography
PERSONAL PROJECT

the concept
Hong Kong is a melting pot of culture. The western and eastern worldview come together in a city full of contradictions. Modern architectural forms blend with the traditional chinese open spaces, market stalls with dried fish and exotic veggies stand side by side to french brasseries and organic wine bars.

My aim was to show this contrast between the old and new, east vs west, traditional vs modern; I was also interested on the human side, the locals, how do they fit in a city that keeps changing and at the same time, remains the same. Finally, I've touched upon the fast paced city, focusing on the speed things are evolving.

Visually I wanted to highlight the importance of the vertical axis. Hong Kong is built on levels; you have to climb stairs, cross junction structures built above the highways, move up and down on escalators; everything is made to ease movement on a hilly, population-dense city. The canted angles are used to create a more dynamic composition. The mixture of artificial and natural lighting is to evoke the dreamy quality of my visual encounters.
